so called friends

To all those united by distancing

This has been an exciting week, I went to the pub with my mates! It used to be a tradition that my primary co-presenter and I would go to the pub after each show on a Friday evening, always at least trying to persuade a succession of third presenters to join us with mixt success. Since the station stopped live recordings we have both been whingeing about missing this specific social activity as well as the more general lack of pub action. With bars and restaurants opening a couple of weeks ago and since our third presenter has now established the spot as her own I thought it was time for some team bonding in the world’s biggest beer garden at my favourite bar and barbecue. For at least two of us it was our first proper social trip out of the house and our first face to face interaction with friends. Predictably the conversation flowed and before we knew it… we missed the barbecue. In my defence, I didn’t know that it stopped at nine. And I did manage to rustle up some dinner… three bags of crisps and four packets of nuts. My friends appear to have forgiven my mistake and still seem to be talking to me.

On the other hand, they may be the only friends still talking to me as this weekend both my usual game nights were cancelled as many of the participants were unable to attend. I am aware that lockdown is easing and that many people have social lives starting up again, but I am surprised at just how many people were busy on a Sunday evening. It’s enough to hurt a man’s feelings when that many drop out on you in one go. Still, I can’t complain, the only reason we were meeting on Sunday was that I was at a family barbecue on Saturday and I was determined not to miss this one at any cost!

I hope you are able to enjoy the releasing of lockdown measures and I hope to be seeing you face-to-face sooner rather than later.

Love and best wishes

Richard

PS

Well that explains it! We’ve just had a message from the first two who said they couldn’t join us last night, the two who started the cascade of excuses that lead to the game being cancelled. Apparently they needed an early night as they were at Manchester airport this morning having booked tickets to Ibiza! Queue the messenger group being swamped with a torrent of envy, jealousy, requests to be taken in their suitcases and tearful farewells. I even had to give them the Ibiza talk: i.e. whatever happens…… remember to always use protection… gloves, masks and regular doses of alcohol Gel.
