To all those united in isolation
It is the habit of those in confinement to count the days, either tracking how long until release or simply marking the passage of time. My family are somewhat crazy. We have started marking ‘interesting’ days of the year. More normal Days you may already have heard of are international women’s day on the 8th of March and World Mental Health day on the 10th of October, days like these are well publicised at the time and will probably see some events each year to raise issues and awareness. However, we have found a whole raft of new days of special note that are worth celebrating: Last week, international ‘Have a Cupcake Day’ was on the 8th of May for which I made V for victory cakes, the 9th of May was ‘Hooray for Buttons’ day when my sister constructed home-made chocolate buttons complete with holes for threading. Over the past week we have celebrated ‘I just called to say I love you’ day, international ‘fruity cocktail’ day, no dirty dishes day and somewhat more poignantly, visit your relative’s day and museum day. There are a ton of positivity websites and up-beat apps that are dedicated to giving you something awesome to celebrate. This means our app gives us lots to cheer but there are always more to find. If you go rooting around day-hunting then please let me know what you come up with.
Not all of us were satisfied with the new game, however. Our father pointed out that this is just a modern corruption of the catholic tradition of each day of the year being the feast day of a different saint. Not to be put off our stride, we added saint’s days to our celebration. Most excitingly, last Thursday was the feast day of ST Corona, the patron saint of academics and apparently especially good to pray to if you are having money problems. She is not to be confused with ST Corona, patron saint of resisting epidemics, who’s feast day is the 28th of march and who’s relics were due to be put on display in a German cathedral before this corona virus epidemic shut it down. Which raises one important question, is there a level of irony that even the Germans can get?
Some of the highlights for the next week will be: devil’s food cake day today, Quiche Lorraine day on Wednesday the 20th and both tiara day and Brother’s Day on Sunday.
I hope you enjoy every day this week and find an excuse to celebrate every one.
Lots of love and best wishes to all

While this is a game born in lockdown, I would like to point out that next Monday, the 25th of May, is International Towel day, celebrating all things Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy, and was marked in my mother’s diary long before we even heard the name of Covid. This year’s International Towel day is even more special as it is 42 years since the original series was broadcast.
